My apologies for having left last night's party early, I had no choice. Shortly before 9:30 we got hit with a lot of lightening and thunder. Oddly, it didn't rain. The first flash of lightening caused a dimming of my lights so I found it necessary to shut down and wait it out.
The power stayed on but there were many many strikes of lightening. Mother Nature's fireworks were pretty awesome and lasted well over an hour. They also did some visible damage.
I had to go into the city this morning for milk. As I enter the city I drive by a bowling alley. A power line to a tranformer was knocked down and it left a 3 foot wide swath of totally burned out vegetation from the curb to the building itself. The powerline landed on an attached storage shed. There didn't seem to have been a fire, it just looks as if a tree limb hit it but no tree limb could have. I didn't notice any burned edges, which surprises me, just a crease which cleaves the upper third of the building in two.
The vegetation in the area between the curb and building was quite high and on one side you can see the singeing of the upper leaves. The area isn't black exactly, it looks as if someone cut into it and then removed the vegetation exposing the underlying soil. I imagine the power company cleaned it out in order to work in that area as the power line has been lifted but it isn't up as high as it was.
I don't believe this had anything to do with the dimming of my lights as this occured just over 4 miles away from me and the transformer involved isn't on the trunk line that heads in my direction. The dimming of my lights more than likely occured when a tree limb fell onto the wires along the road to my house. Odd that I didn't hear the fire siren. If my windows are open I can hear it every day at noon, but not when there was an obvious emergency. It would be very unlikely that the fire department didn't respond as this particular tree limb caught fire.
According to our local weather report we will be treated to more thunder and lightening throughout the next three days. It will be sometime on Tuesday before this system leaves the area. Which means that it will be sometime on Tuesday before I get a reliable internet connection again. In the meantime my visits will be hit and miss which is fine as I have much to occupy me while I'm waiting. It might just take me that long to dry out the drivers seat of my car.
I'm not a big fan of blue grass music but when John the Squabbler told me HE left his car window open and now has a Soggy Bottom I just couldn't resist it.
The car seat is resisting the drying out process because I can't leave the window open long enough. I don't have a soggy bottom because I used a sheet of plastic on the car seat.
The updated weather report calls for rain through Thursday so I guess the three of us will have Soggy Bottoms until then.
I have satellite connection and heavy storms tend to knock it out briefly. I knew it would happen but it didn't really start until last week. I may need to wipe the dirt off the dish. It does make a difference sometimes.
Tree limbs and power lines should not be in the same sentence. Even worse when they try to share space. During an ice storm several years ago, a limb fell across the main line to our house. Didn't snap the line, just made it sag. We contacted the electric company, thinking they would temporarily cut the power, remove the limb, and restore the line to its original place. (We still had electricity.) Instead, they cut the power, cut the line to our house, restored power, and left us without electricity for two days.

lone,
Thankfully my utilities are all underground, no overhead wires. However I am surrounded by trees. The ones in the back shouldn't bother too much if they lose limbs but the woods are about 15 feet from my deck.
I have no clue what happened at the bowling alley, but it sure happened.
I will if I have any left after disposing of all the body parts. I have to work tomorrow and I hope I make it there without looking like I wet my pants.
I left my car window open last night. This morning began a little on the soggy side - the bottom side, that is. But of course it was the fault of the brain contained within the top side that the bottom side should be soggy, so I have only regret and no complaints. Today the sun is shining brightly - which it does at all times, although frequently above a thick layer of cloud - and I think I should stop writing about it and go play in it. But anyway I've enjoyed coming by.
I may have to go and dry it with a blow dryer. It's too humid, and it keeps raining so I can't leave the car windows open. I had to use plastic on the seat to keep from getting my bottom wet today. Still soaked.
So far the storms haven't been that severe at my house. It seems to be hitting hardest around us, but faily calm and just a lot of rain where I live. They've added another two days to this forecast. We run the risk of storms daily through Thursday.
Hubby went to Tractor Supply on Saturday. It was raining when he left here and he had the window open. Parked at the store and didn't roll up the window so the torrential downpour that made him stay inside the store longer ended up in the car. I've had soggy bottom for two days. I used plastic to stay dry while heading for work today.
I had to tell him that leaving the window open in a rainstorm is not how one does a carpool.
hey Sherry, too funny, you soggy bottomed people! Yep I know what you mean about the car drying out, if you can't leave the windows down for the rain and some of us don't have the luxury of a garage. I missed that more than anything. But for me it's more the floor board and side panels as the seats are leather, so I can pretty much wipe those down. No rain at all today that I have seen or heard yet.

Bella,
Oh sure rub it in. My seats are upholstered.
When I read John's comment about leaving his window open and his soggy bottom half I heard the song A Man Of Constant Sorrow in my head. I had to, although I'm not sure he'd appreciate it. I have the windows open now, but it's too humid for it to do much good.
I love that movie, especially the REAL Bluegrass/country music, makes me tap a foot and sing along...the movie is a riot.PS; the only way my bottom gets soggy is from working in the yard and sweating like a herd of Yak. BC

Chris,
I've never seen the entire movie, but it's on our list of movies to watch this winter. I love that song, and I'm not a big bluegrass fan. I like some of it.
The Soggy Bottom Boys popped into my head with this song while I was reading John's comment here in this post. I HAD to add the tune.
Since you never get soggy bottoms from sitting on wet car seats, I take it you have sense enough to close the window?
Morn'n, No ah,(Noah) I think it will a little longer.......Only today the Ark wont need to be all big because only 2 of the 7 billion humans get a ticket and we have killed of hundreds of thousands of animal species so a dingy should do............
Sherry'sCherries, Your assuming there will be a second go around......... Hmmmm. "If" there is you would want to start all over again trying to decide which animals are ok to exterminate would you......... Fool me once shame on you... fool me twice shame on me! Mosquitos are equal in important to everything in the webb of life.....we are not! If there to choices made about what/who should be omitted for the next go around..........Joram
I loved that movie! So I think you got the weather we had. Early Monday morning we had severe storms. The Ouad cities had 94 mile an hour winds, and Iowa had 100. Trees and power lines down every where. We got lucky, and caught the tail end of it but, the damage was spread over many miles. Hope your rainy stuff has passed. Dixie
I am surrounded on three sides by woods but it didn't seem to me that the wind was all that bad. The lightening was our problem on Saturday and Sunday. We've been getting brief thunderstorms on a daily basis since. My garden is loving it, and so am I, weeds pull so much easier from wet ground.
At least the drivers seat dried out so no more soggy bottom for me.

Java,
Yeah, I got it dried out late yesterday. It kept raining and I couldn't stay out long enough to get the job completely done. I also told him that is NOT how one does a carpool.
Same here Sherry, We been having brief Thunderstorms daily. I think its over for now since the air was nice today cool, and dry. All the rain has made all my plants very happy, and your right about the weeds....They do pull much easier when the ground is wet. I have had many of them to pull. Have to mow a lot more too! Dixie
Hugggggggggggggggggz,
Taylor
Yeah! I may get to watch three whole days of it. Gives me something to do if I can't get online.
Sherry
You really have had some problems with internet connections in recent months, haven't you! I guess you will just have to wait this one out.
I have satellite connection and heavy storms tend to knock it out briefly. I knew it would happen but it didn't really start until last week. I may need to wipe the dirt off the dish. It does make a difference sometimes.

MISS SHERRY: HELLO. TallPockets has had DIM lights most all his lifetime. WINK.
A man of constant sorrow AND a 40 watt bulb in a 100 watt world yours,
TallPockets.
(Hope this finds you and yours WELL!!)
It rained on Saturday, and Sunday, and yesterday and it looks like rain again today. I guess I'm stuck with a soggy car seat for awhile.
Sherry
Me and mine are well, just somewhat..er..soggy bottomed.
Sherry
Have a great day!
Cheers! ~MacKenzie
I suspect you're right. The only thing I'm seeing a lot of are mosquitos. Do you think we could omit those entirely next time?
Sherry
I did get the drivers seat dried out so no more soggy bottom, so it can rain all it wants to.
Sherry
I was kidding.

Sherry
Yeah butt!!!
Our car seat was so wet from Hubby leaving the window open while shopping during a torrential downpour that it LOOKED like we had leaky seats.

Yes, but due to MY spending time drying out the car seat with the shop vac, HE gets to mow the lawn. I think that's fair.
Sherry
I sent you an email, did you get it? Please let me know OK.
Thanks :-)
Reba~
Yes I got it. Everything is fine.
